In a world filled with countless audio options, finding that perfect sound system can often feel like an elusive quest. Audiophiles, casual music enthusiasts, and home decor aficionados alike seek the ideal combination of audio excellence and aesthetic allure.
JBL has unveiled its brand-new Authentics line of wireless speakers, which it emphasizes as providing powerful audio in a “retro design” that draws inspiration from the company’s heritage.
The line, which comprises three speakers, includes the Authentics 500, Authentics 300, and Authentics 200. All of them are designed for usage in and around the home and feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
Bass enthusiasts should enjoy the deep, rich lows that the Authentics 300 multiroom speaker creates as it gets very loud. While JBL claims an “industry first” integration of Amazon Alexa and Google voice assistants, the functions are nearly identical across the board. Customers now have the option of enrolling both virtual assistants so they can be used simultaneously, making it easy to “switch between them for different activities.”

Design and Build
The “legendary” JBL L100 speaker from the 1970s served as inspiration for the design of the Authentics series, which features a bespoke synthetic leather-wrapped enclosure, a premium aluminum frame, and a redesigned Quadrex grille. The Authentics line, according to JBL, is intended “to make a statement.”
The Authentics speakers are built of 100% recycled fabric, 85% recycled plastic, and 50% recycled aluminum, all of which are environmentally friendly materials. The packaging, which is only available in black, is composed of FSC-certified paper and printed with soy ink.
The topside of the Authentics 300 houses the controls. Along with knobs for regulating its volume, treble, and bass, the “Moments” button features a power, Bluetooth, and heart-shaped emblem. With the Moments button, you can quickly access a playlist on the streaming provider of your choice or edit a favorite song.
The power button is larger so you don’t inadvertently switch off the speaker, and the three knobs all have concave surfaces that make them easy to push even when you’re not looking. The LED light ring that surrounds all three knobs and visibly indicates how high or low they are set was one of our favorite design features.
The Authentics 300 has a few connections on the back at the place where the detachable power cord is plugged in. On a speaker this nice, it is a pleasant surprise to see an AUX input (perhaps for a turntable with a preamp), as well as an Ethernet connector for wired networking.
Although completely wireless, you might want to limit the use of this speaker to your backyard and specific rooms in your home because it lacks an IP rating, which indicates dust or water resistance. We suggest checking the weather before using the speaker outside.
Connectivity and App Experience
It took a trip to JBL’s One app, which is accessible on iOS and Android, to configure the Authentics 300. After being discovered, our device is prompted to pair with the speaker and input WiFi credentials. By using the speaker in Bluetooth mode, which only entails pressing the speaker’s Bluetooth button and then looking for it in the settings app on your phone, you can completely avoid going through this step.
The JBL app can also be used to update the speaker’s software, manage streaming services, set up Moments, and change a three-band EQ. Because of the app’s careful planning and intelligent design, using any or all of these features is straightforward. We’re especially pleased to note that each section’s content has been enlarged and bolded to make it easier to read.
The top of the screen of the JBL One app (available for iOS and Android) features a image of the speaker and a battery life indicator. A music section gives volume and playback options for the currently playing track beneath that. The supported music streaming services (Amazon Music, Calm Radio, Napster, Qobuz, Tidal, TuneIn, and iHeartRadio) can also have tiles added.
The next element is an EQ with three straightforward treble, midrange, and bass customizable bands. Compared to the JBL headphones app’s implementation (10 changeable bands), this one is a little more simple, and it still works effectively in most situations.
Additionally, you can set up a voice assistant via the JBL One app, which entails a function that is exclusive to the entire Authentics series. These are the only smart speakers available right now that concurrently combine Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa. The Authentics speakers allow you to use both hands-free systems, unlike other smart speakers that only support one or the other. This function will be useful if you share a home with another person who uses a different smart assistant or if you like some features of one and others of the other.
Due to the speaker’s bigger size, JBL was able to incorporate a 5.24-inch woofer, two 1-inch tweeters, and a 6.5-inch passive radiator to produce loud, clean music with 100 watts of power. This is without a doubt the best-sounding portable speaker we’ve tested in terms of pure performance, and if that’s what you’re looking for, you won’t be let down. It can reproduce frequencies in the range of 45Hz to 20kHz.
The JBL Authentics 300 astounds with its ability to reproduce highs that are nothing short of crystal clear. Whether you’re listening to the soaring notes of a classical symphony or the intricate details of your favorite rock guitar solos, this speaker system offers a level of precision and clarity that’s nothing short of extraordinary. The tweeters deliver every nuance of the music, making you feel like you’re in the same room as the performers.
Moving on to the midrange, the JBL Authentics 300 displays a talent for delivering rich and resonant tones that breathe life into your music. The warm and velvety midrange ensures that vocals are nothing short of sublime, while instruments find their space to shine. Whether it’s the soulful timbre of a jazz saxophone or the heartfelt lyrics of your favorite singer, this speaker ensures an emotionally charged listening experience.
When it’s time for the bass to make its presence known, the JBL Authentics 300 does not disappoint. The integrated subwoofers churn out deep, thunderous bass that you can feel as much as hear. Whether you’re enjoying the pulsating beats of electronic music or the rumble of an action movie soundtrack, this speaker immerses you in a world of low-frequency sensations.
What truly sets the JBL Authentics 300 apart is its ability to achieve a remarkable balance between highs, mids, and lows. No element of the sound spectrum overpowers the others, ensuring a beautifully harmonious listening experience. You’ll appreciate the meticulous engineering that has gone into achieving this balance, as it allows you to rediscover your favorite tracks with newfound depth and clarity.
The JBL Authentics 300 redefines the notion of sound quality, delivering a captivating auditory experience that’s second to none. Whether you’re a music connoisseur, a movie buff, or someone who simply appreciates the joy of outstanding audio, this speaker system will elevate your audio adventures to a whole new level. Immerse yourself in the symphony of sound that is the JBL Authentics 300, and let it transport you to a world where every note, every beat, and every word is heard in all its sonic glory.
