Features and Performance
When it comes to unlocking the true potential of photography, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV stands as a formidable contender. Boasting a 30.4-megapixel full-frame sensor, this camera redefines image quality, delivering stunning details and lifelike colors
The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV features Digital Lens Optimizer technology which compensates for a range of optical defects from various lenses, including chromatic aberration, distortion, peripheral brightness, and diffraction, and the camera can store lens data in order to avoid having to re-register lenses prior to each use. The camera can do this in real time and output JPEGs that have already undergone the necessary adjustments.
With a compatible smart device and the CS100 Connect Station, wireless sharing, control, and image transfer are made possible by the integrated Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity. Moreso, with the integrated GPS module in the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, you can automatically sync time with the Universal Time Code via satellites and geotag images in-camera. For broad coverage of support, this module is compatible with American GPS, Japanese quasi-zenith Michibiki satellites, and Russian GLONASS.
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV has a built-in intervalometer that permits the creation of time-lapse imagery and supports recording 1-99 consecutive frames in pre-selected intervals from 1 second to 99 hours 59 minutes and 59 seconds. The camera can also be configured to record an infinite number of frames.
Image and Video Quality
Similar to earlier models in the primary 5D series, the Mark IV uses a newly built 30.4MP full-frame CMOS sensor in an effort to strike a compromise between high resolution and low-light performance. This offers a useful boost in total resolution without sacrificing sensitivity. Furthermore, because of the DIGIC 6+ image processor that it is coupled with, it provides outstanding performance in its original ISO 100–32000 range, which can be extended to ISO 50–102400.\
Photography doesn’t always happen under perfect lighting conditions, and the 5D Mark IV excels in challenging situations. With an expanded ISO range of 100-32000, this camera showcases its low-light prowess. Noise is kept to a minimum even at higher ISO settings, allowing photographers to confidently explore the realms of dusk and dawn, capturing moments that were once elusive in the dim glow of natural light.
The 5D Mark IV features an improved High Density Reticular AF system with 61 phase-detect points, all of which are sensitive to f/8 and 41 of which are cross-type, to ensure your subject is razor sharp. The center point can operate in extremely low light conditions down to -3 EV. This sensor’s increased vertical coverage—24% in the periphery and 8% in the center—allows it to track and locate subjects in the frame more accurately than its predecessors.
In addition to advanced tracking and focusing while using the optical finder for stills, Live View and video can now use Dual Pixel CMOS AF on the actual imaging sensor. For quicker and more precise focusing in various modes, this provides approximately 80% coverage of phase-detection autofocus. With smoother rack focusing and none of the drawbacks associated with contrast-based systems, it is perfect for video purposes. Additionally, as a photographer you can easily change focus by tapping, thanks to this device’s excellent touchscreen functionality.
The 5D Mark IV is a professional stills and video recording camera. It can record in DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) quality at up to 30 frames per second at 500 Mbps. It can also record in Full HD 1080p at 60 frames per second and HD 720p at 120 frames per second for slow motion playback. Full HD 1080p film features 4:2:0 sampling, whereas 4K video has 4:2:2 sampling and 8-bit color depth when recorded in-camera. It is also possible to save uncompressed Full HD 1080p video to an optional external recorder with 4:2:2 color sampling via HDMI. To achieve the optimal 1:1 pixel sampling ratio for 4K video, the central 4096 x 2160 area of the sensor is used at a 1.74x crop, whereas Full HD recording uses entire full frame.
Ports and Connectivity
The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, with its thoughtfully designed array of ports, ensures that photographers have the tools they need to seamlessly integrate their workflow and unleash their creative potential.
The inclusion of a USB 3.0 port in the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is a game-changer for photographers who value swift and efficient data transfer. Whether you’re tethered shooting in a studio or quickly offloading files to your computer, the high-speed USB 3.0 port ensures that your workflow remains smooth and uninterrupted. Additionally, the HDMI port opens up avenues for connecting the 5D Mark IV to external monitors, providing a larger and more detailed view for critical composition and review.
For videographers and content creators, the 3.5mm headphone jack on the 5D Mark IV is a gem. This port allows for real-time monitoring of audio levels during video recording, ensuring that your audio is as pristine as your visuals. The ability to fine-tune audio settings while capturing video adds a layer of professionalism to your productions, making the 5D Mark IV a versatile tool for those who demand precision in both image and sound.
Photographers who seek to expand their creative horizons will appreciate the inclusion of a remote control terminal on the 5D Mark IV. This allows for the connection of remote control devices, enabling hands-free shooting and reducing the risk of camera shake in long-exposure situations.
The 5D Mark IV doesn’t stop at providing connectivity; it also offers flexibility in storage options with its dual card slots. Supporting both CompactFlash and SD card formats, this feature allows photographers to choose the storage medium that aligns with their preferences and needs. It also opens up possibilities for creating automatic backups during critical shoots, providing an added layer of data security.
In the age of instant sharing and remote control, the 5D Mark IV doesn’t disappoint. Its built-in Wi-Fi and NFC capabilities enable photographers to wirelessly transfer images to smart devices for quick sharing on social media or remote shooting via the Canon Camera Connect app. This level of connectivity not only streamlines the sharing process but also adds a layer of convenience for those who wish to control their camera remotely.
